Climate
We know that climate change is affecting the planet – impacting on our weather, rainfall and natural habitats.
We have thought really hard about how to minimise the impact of your stay at Ty Uchaf Farm – not just from an aesthetic perspective and blending in with the natural landscape, but also from an environmental perspective.
We built the site out of natural materials, sourced locally/responsibly and from FSC certified suppliers. We used the absolute minimum of concrete (mostly just for the main support posts for the pods, tipi, field kitchen and the BBQ bases) – and you will see “waste” material used and reused – for example your kindling is probably partly offcuts from the build or packaging from deliveries we get. We have 100% solar electricity on the site and no wastewater treatment energy costs, due to our greywater reedbed and compost toilets. We recycle every bit of your waste that we can. We have as many supplies delivered to us as we can, to increase the transport efficiency. We are experimenting with solar hot water to get rid of the gas showers as soon as we can. If you think we are missing an opportunity, please tell us!
Our Carbon Footprint
We have done our best to calculate the carbon footprint of an individual stay, for the things we do to get ready for your arrival:
Activity |
Notes |
CO2 |
Transport for materials (cleaning supplies, etc) |
We estimate 1 journey of 6.75km for every 10 visits – this includes an element of deliveries coming to us on their rounds locally. |
80g |
Washing machine |
Line dried and no ironing of laundry – heating anything with electricity uses huge amount of energy. We use eDF electricity. |
189g |
Vacuuming |
Recharging of battery vacuum cleaner. |
8g |
Wastewater |
No energy costs as all done via reed bed and compost heap. |
0g |
Logs |
Your logs come from our own fields and are cut by battery chainsaw and split by diesel tractor or by hand. Burning the logs is essentially carbon neutral in climate terms – our woods are constantly regenerating, much of the logs are from fallen trees and the carbon released has been stored for less than 50 years. We estimate 50g CO2 for your initial free supply of logs. |
30g |
Charcoal |
Again, burning the charcoal is essentially carbon neutral in climate terms as the wood burned is a very short-term store and quickly regenerated on a 5-10 year cycle. We have estimated 3g CO2 for the total journey of your initial 1kg bag – 1000km x 44ton truck x 105g/km |
3g |
Miscellaneous |
An estimate of the carbon footprint of the small amount of cleaning materials and other supplies we use for each stay. |
40g |
Total |
|
350g |
We think 350g is pretty low-impact and is broadly equivalent to the CO2 a petrol/diesel car emitted coming here from the bottom of the hill! If you travelled 100 miles to get to us, you may have emitted around 13kg of CO2
Your impact:
Please help to reduce your impact here by:
-
* Walk or cycle locally if you can.
-
* Wash, sort and recycle all your rubbish.
-
* Take shorter showers (150g CO2 per 5 minute shower).
-
* Don’t overfill the kettle – 10g CO2.
-
* Buy from local suppliers with lower food miles and less packaging.
